Seminar for Dominican architects with the Auroville Earth Institute

New Delhi –  The Embassy of the Dominican Republic in India organized a two day seminar titled “Introduction to Earth Architecture” with the Auroville Earth Institute (AVEI). Attended by students and professors of various architecture departments in the Dominican Republic, the seminar held on 6th and 7th May 2022, intended to present the theoretical and practical work developed by the AVEI in India and in different sites around the world.

Lead by Satprem Maini, director of the Auroville Earth Institute, and by Omar Rabie, lecturer at the AVEI and at the IIT Kharagpur, the seminar was divided in two modules. Satprem Maini focussed  on the techniques perfected at the AVEI such as the use of compressed stabilised earth blocks to build arches, vaults and domes.  On day two, Omar Rabie presented the principles of Bioclimatic architecture, insisting on the importance of the relation between environment and architecture for the construction of sustainable habitats.

Over the last 33 years, AVEI has become one of the world’s top centres for excellence in earthen architecture, working in more than 30 countries. As the Representative and Resource Centre for Asia of the UNESCO Chair “Earthen Architecture, Constructive Cultures and Sustainable Development”, AVEI aims to empower local stakeholders through an international network of experts. The work of the Earth Institute has attempted to revive traditional skills and to link vernacular traditions of raw earth construction with modern technologies of stabilised earth.
