GOVERNMENT
The Dominican Republic is a representative democracy with a presidential regime. It’s constitution divides the authority of the state into three branches: the executive, which is exercised by the President and his cabinet; the legislative, which is vested in a bicameral parliamentary body; and an independent judicial system.
The President holds office for a term of four years and can only be re-elected once. He is also commander in chief of the armed forces.
In the national congress, the Senate is composed of 32 seats, one for each province, and the Chamber of Deputies of 190 seats, 1 for every 50,000 citizens. The members of both chambers are elected by popular vote to serve four year terms.
