Dominican Film Festival at India International Centre in New Delhi

New Delhi – Throughout the month of August 2022, the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in India presented a selection of recent feature and documentary films from the Dominican Republic at the Indian International Centre in New Delhi.

The Dominican Film Festival was kickstarted on August 8th with the multi awarded film Cocote (2017) by Nelson Carlos de los Santos in which an evangelical gardener returns to his home town to attend his father’s funeral, who was killed by a policeman. To mourn the deceased, he is forced to participate in religious celebrations that are contrary to his will and beliefs, and considers taking revenge for his father’s death.

Cocote was followed by the screenings of Liborio (2021), Caribbean Fantasy (2017) and Candela(2021).

Talking to the Spanish news agency EFE, Ambassador David Puig stated that the four movies selected for the festival at the India International Center presents the image of a cinema “rooted in the Dominican reality, that portrays with honesty the conflicts of a developing nation”. The Dominican film industry, he added, is “young and dynamic”, and has managed to increase in a few years the quality of its products, with many movies being screened and awarded in major international film festivals.
