Dr. Lorgia Garcia Peña delivers lecture on Dominican literature and studies
New Delhi - On Friday 10th September, Dr. Lorgia Garcia Peña delivered the lecture titled “Dominican literature and studies: a contemporary perspective”, which was attended by professors and students from universities in Delhi, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Aligarh, Lucknow, and Kolkata.
Organized by the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in India, this on-line conference was the first of a series of events, planned for the coming months, which aim to present to Indian audiences the diversity in the literature and scholarship produced today in the Dominican Republic and its diaspora.
Dr. Lorgia García Peña is a distinguished and award-winning Dominican scholar known for her research on the construction of Dominican identities, diasporas and “Afrolatinidad”. Her first book The Borders of Dominicanidad: Race, Nations and Archives of Contradictions was published in 2016 by Duke University Press. Until the summer of 2021, she was associated with Harvard University. She is now a professor of the Department of Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora at the School of Arts and Sciences of Tufts University.
In his introductory remarks Ambassador Puig highlighted that “This conference had been specifically conceived for the community of scholars and students interested in the Spanish language and the Hispano-American cultures in Indian universities”. Recognizing the growth of this community in the past decade, he added that the intention of his team was “to design a continuous program of activities in order to showcase in India the different aspects of the Dominican Republic’s Culture”.
