Dominican Poet José Mármol visits New Delhi
New Delhi - The Dominican poet José Mármol participated in the international conference “Connected Histories, Shared Present: Cross-Cultural Experiences between Latin America, the Caribbean and India” organized by the India International Centre in New Delhi. The academic event, which took place from February 20th to 22nd, 2023, gathered writers, historians, political scientists, and economists, from India, Latin America and the Caribbean.
José Mármol presented in a panel dedicated to the Caribbean, with Tota Mangar from Guyana and Shalima Mohammad from Trinidad and Tobago. His intervention revolved around the relation between magical realism and poetry in the Caribbean region. The panel was chaired by Ambassador David Puig.
During his stay in India, José Mármol was also invited for a bilingual reading of his poetry at the Instituto Cervantes of New Delhi on 23rd February. On that occasion, José Mármol read in Spanish a selection of poems from the book Esquicio del vuelo while the poet Subhro Bandhopadyay read their English versions.
Born in 1960, José Mármol is one of the leading poets from the Dominican Republic. He has authored several collections of poems and essays. His poetic works include El ojo del arúspice (1984), La invención del día (1989), Lengua de paraíso (1992), Deus ex machina y otros poemas (2001), Lenguaje del mar (2012) y Yo, la isla dividida (2019). He has participated in numerous festivals in Europe, United States and Latin America, and has been translated into English, French, Italian and Russian.
