Dominican Republic participates in the 5th General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance
NEW DELHI - The Dominican Republic participated in the sessions of the 5th General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), held between October 17 and 20, 2022, in New Delhi, India. The Dominican delegation was headed by H.E. David Puig, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to India. It also included Mr. Gustavo Sosa, Minister Counsellor in the Dominican mission in New Delhi.
The inaugural session of the General Assembly was co-chaired by H.E. Raj Kumar Singh, Minister of New and Renewable Energy of India in his capacity as President of the ISA, and H.E. Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, Minister of State for Development, Francophonie and International Associations of France in her capacity as Co-President of the ISA. Ms. Damilola Ogunbiyi, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All and Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General of the ISA also took part in the inaugural session.
The General Assembly was the occasion for the member countries to tackle various administrative and organization matters of the ISA. The reports of the different constitutive committees of the organization as well as the work program and budget for 2023 were approved by the membership. In addition, a technical session was held with a high-level conference on technologies for the clean energy transition.
As a signatory country, the Dominican Republic participated in the Assembly of the ISA as an observer. At present, 110 countries are signatories to the ISA Framework Agreement, of which 90 countries have submitted the necessary instruments of ratification to become full members of the ISA.
Conceived as a joint effort by India and France to mobilize efforts against climate change through deployment of solar energy solution, the ISA. It was conceptualized on the side-lines of the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in Paris in 2015. With the amendment of its Framework Agreement in 2020, all member states of the United Nations are now eligible to join the ISA.
