Dominican Republic announces its ratification of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture
NEW DELHI – Within the framework of the ninth session of the Governing Council of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, held in New Delhi, India, from September 19 to 24, 2022, the Dominican Republic announced its recent ratification of this treaty and expressed its commitment to share with the rest of the world its plant genetic resources for food and agriculture through the Multilateral System of Access and Benefit Sharing.
The Dominican Republic was represented at the meetings of the Governing Council by the researcher and specialist in plant genetic resources, José Richard Ortiz, member of the Dominican Institute for Agricultural and Forestry Research (IDIAF). Under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Dominican Republic, the IDIAF is responsible for overseeing the conservation and national documentation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture.
During the inauguration and first plenary session, Mr. Ortiz was accompanied by the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic in India, H.E. David Puig and the first secretary Bianca Báez Pearson. Mr. Richard Ortiz and Ambassador Puig had the opportunity to have an exchange with the secretary of the treaty, Dr. Kent Nnadozie, and the president of the session, Mrs. Yasmina El Bahloul, who shared their satisfaction with the formal accession of the Dominican Republic to the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
On December 30, 2021, the President of the Dominican Republic, Luís Abinader, approved the ratification for the country's accession to the International Treaty, which the country had signed on June 11, 2002. This ratification initiative was promoted by Orlando Jorge Mera, who at the time was Minister of Environment and Natural Resources.
As of May 2, 2022, the Dominican Republic became the 149th country to ratify the International Treaty. On that occasion, Dr. Kent Nnadozie, secretary of the International Treaty, expressed that the community of contracting countries "are delighted to welcome the Dominican Republic to the global community committed to safeguarding, exchanging and caring for the seeds of the plants that feed the world".
