India announces opening of an Embassy in Dominican Republic in 2021
NEW DELHI - The government of India announced on December 30th 2020 the opening of three new embassies in Dominican Republic, Paraguay and Estonia. A press release, issued after the approval of the decision during a Cabinet Meeting, chaired by Primer Minister Narendra Modi, stated that the new Indian missions abroad will be established in 2021.
The press release added that the opening of those missions “will help expand India’s diplomatic footprint, deepen political relations, enable growth of bilateral trade, investment and economic engagements, facilitate stronger people-to-people contacts, bolster political outreach in multilateral fora and help garner support for India’s foreign policy objectives”.
This decision marks a new chapter in Dominico-Indian bilateral relations and in the strengthening of ties between the two countries. Diplomatic relations between the Dominican Republic and the Republic of India were signed in 1999. Following the establishment of these relations, the government of the Dominican Republic opened a permanent mission in New Delhi in 2006. Presently, the Embassy of India in Havana, Cuba, is concurrently accredited to the Dominican Republic.
